Mimosa Mine’s corporate social investment (CSI) support for the modernisation of Mberengwa District Hospital has drawn commendation from Government as efforts to improve access to healthcare in the Midlands district continue, Mining Zimbabwe can report.

The hospital upgrade is expected to improve healthcare delivery for more than 50,000 people, bringing essential medical services closer to communities that have traditionally travelled to other towns to access certain facilities.

Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube commended Mimosa for aligning its CSI programmes with Government’s development priorities, particularly efforts to improve public services and reduce disparities between rural and urban communities.

Ncube said the mine’s support reflected the role that private-sector investment can play in complementing Government efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

“I note with satisfaction and applaud Mimosa Mine for consistently aligning its Corporate Social Investment programmes with the Second Republic’s people-centred NDS 2 and Call to Action, No Compromise to Service Delivery Blueprints,” he said.

The hospital modernisation programme includes improvements to medical facilities and the provision of equipment intended to strengthen healthcare services. However, the specific scope and financial value of Mimosa’s contribution to the wider project were not detailed.

For residents, improved medical facilities are expected to reduce the need to travel to other towns for essential services, easing the financial and logistical burden associated with accessing healthcare.

One community member said residents previously travelled to Zvishavane or Gweru to access X-ray services, highlighting the challenges associated with limited local healthcare capacity.

Another resident welcomed the development and called on other large companies to support initiatives aimed at addressing infrastructure and service delivery gaps in surrounding communities.

The upgrade comes amid broader efforts to improve access to quality healthcare, including maternal and child health services, as well as strengthen public infrastructure in rural areas.

For the mining sector, Mimosa’s involvement highlights the importance of corporate social investment in supporting communities beyond mining operations. Investments in healthcare infrastructure can contribute to broader local development, particularly in areas where access to essential public services remains limited.

As modernisation work continues, the hospital’s long-term impact will depend on the availability of medical personnel, equipment, medicines and the resources required to sustain improved services.
