Timothy Chizuzu, who began his career as an office orderly at the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development in Kadoma, has been named Outstanding Mining Prospector 2026 at the Young Miners Excellence Awards, recognising his progression into prospecting, mining consultancy and industry leadership, Mining Zimbabwe can report.
By Rudairo Mapuranga
Chizuzu entered the workforce in 2003 after completing his Ordinary Level education at Rimuka High School in Kadoma. He worked as a contract meter reader for Kadoma City Council before joining the Ministry of Agriculture as a general hand and later moving to the Ministry of Mines as an office orderly.
His exposure to mining administration helped shape his interest in mineral prospecting, leading to his certification as an approved prospector in March 2006 at the age of 21.
The qualification marked a turning point in his career, opening the way for his involvement in mineral prospecting, claims administration and small-scale gold mining.
Through Timella Mining Consultancy, Chizuzu provides services relating to prospecting, mining claims administration and regulatory compliance. He is also associated with Sustineri Environmental Consultancy (Pvt) Ltd, reflecting his interests in environmental management alongside mineral resource development.
His professional development has been supported by academic training in mineral law, governance and environmental sustainability. He holds a Diploma in Mineral Law and Policy from the Zimbabwe Institute of Legal Studies, a Bachelor of Science in Peace, Conflict and Governance from Great Zimbabwe University, and a Master of Science in Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sustainability from Bindura University of Science Education.
He is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration in Public Management at the National University of Science and Technology.
Beyond his business interests, Chizuzu has been involved in organising and representing Zimbabwe’s prospecting and small-scale mining communities. He helped establish the Zimbabwe Prospectors Association, serving as secretary-general before becoming chairman. He also serves as Mashonaland West provincial chairman of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation.
His work in industry representation has included advocating for the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining, as well as improved access to mineral rights, finance and technical knowledge for smaller operators.
Chizuzu has also participated in mining industry engagements in Australia, China, Ghana, Zambia, Mozambique and Belarus. These have included engagements associated with the Africa Down Under conference in Perth and Zambia’s Mining and Investment Insaka, where issues around investment, technology and mineral development feature prominently.
He has consistently advocated for greater beneficiation and value addition in African mining, arguing for mineral-producing countries to develop more domestic capacity around their natural resources rather than relying predominantly on raw mineral exports.
Youth and women’s participation in mining is another area of interest, particularly access to mineral rights, technical training and opportunities to participate in mine ownership and leadership.
His environmental work includes founding the National Environmental Awareness Trust (NEAT Zimbabwe), through which he promotes environmental awareness, mine rehabilitation and safer mining practices. This focus complements his academic background in natural resources management and the environmental challenges associated with small-scale mining.
Chizuzu’s recognition comes against the backdrop of Zimbabwe’s efforts to expand mineral production while strengthening the participation of indigenous operators and improving standards across the mining value chain.
His career, from an entry-level position in the public service to approved prospector and mining industry representative, highlights the role of technical knowledge, professional development and industry organisation in building a career in the sector.
The Outstanding Mining Prospector 2026 award recognises his progression within the industry and his involvement in prospecting, consultancy and the representation of miners.
