The Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) has voted to extend President Henrietta Rushwaya’s tenure to 2033, a move the organisation says will ensure policy continuity and institutional stability in a sector crucial to the nation’s economy.
The resolution was ratified during the ZMF’s Special General Council Meeting and Annual General Meeting (AGM). Delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of the extension, with 180 votes for and just one against.
The motion, originally tabled by Mashonaland West Province’s Timothy Chizuzu, extends the presidential and executive term of office from five to seven years. It was seconded by Midlands Chairman Makumba Nyenje, who also successfully moved an amendment to extend the tenure of General Council members to 2033, subject to the necessary constitutional amendments.
The ZMF stated that leadership continuity is necessary to consolidate ongoing reforms in the mining sector. The motion specifically cites the need for consistent leadership to drive the transformation of the sector through formalisation, mechanisation, beneficiation, and environmental sustainability.
“Let me take this opportunity to congratulate the executive on the extension of its term of office,” the federation noted following the vote, confirming that the new mandate runs to 2033.
The extended mandate solidifies Rushwaya’s influence over the federation, which represents both large-scale and small-scale miners in a country heavily reliant on mineral exports such as gold and lithium. Policy certainty and stable institutional leadership are frequently cited by international investors as critical factors when deploying capital in emerging markets.
The extended ZMF National Executive is as follows:
President: Henrietta Rushwaya
Vice President: Marufu Sithole
Secretary General: Morgan Mugawu
Treasurer General: Prosper Shumba
Secretary for Women’s Affairs: Jessica Mazivazvose
Secretary for Youth: Darlington Ndlovu
